A kata or form is a sequence of blocks, kicks and punches which incorporates aspects of attack and defense into the form of imaginary fighting. A kata is an essential practice tool for the student since it unites balance, breathing, control, and power. Below is a list of kata used by the American Karate Academy of Self Defense. Please note that not all the kata are taught in their traditional form. Several have been modified for practical self defense purposes.
